FAQs

1. What do you look for in a submission? Does the length matter?

Word For Word looks for raw and authentic submissions that speak to us in a way only the written word knows how: we want to be challenged, evoked, made to think and feel in ways we didn’t know were possible. We specifically value pieces that address a present and/or past conflict through creative means. Length makes no difference, 2500 words is the maximum word count, not the goal (sometimes short and sweet is the way to go!).

2. What don’t you want in a submission?

Explicit and gratuitous content is not appropriate for this literary magazine - we are a primarily youth community, and submissions containing such content will not be selected for publication (however, if the piece has other qualities we value, we may ask the writer to revise and re-submit if they are interested).

3. Can anybody submit to WordForWord, is there an age cut off?

We specifically ask for work from students aged 12-18!

4. What are your submission periods?

We accept submissions 10 out of the 12 months of the year. However, we take a holiday hiatus in winter from December 15th to January 15th and again in spring from April 15th to May 15th.

5. I submitted a piece a week ago, when should I expect to hear back about that status of my submission?

Our submission process takes around 2 weeks! If we do not get back to you by then, feel free to shoot us an email at wordforwordlit@gmail.com

6. Can I get involved with Word For Word in another way outside submitting?

Yes! Subscribe to our newsletters and receive updates on what’s going on in our community. We also plan to have a yearly open mic once a year (so stay tuned!).

7. What is your Revise & Re-Submit System?

The Revise & Re-Submit system allows almost all works that are not initially selected for publication to be sent back to the writer with a series of comments for revision. If the revised piece is sent back to us, we will once again consider it for publication.
